This is !Mines, version 1.00 (16 July 1992) by Alex McLintock
About Mines:
------------
Mines is a game to be run under Risc Os. The idea is to get
from the top left of a tiled board to the bottom right without
stepping on a mined tile. You can take a step onto a tile just by
clicking the mouse button over it, but only if it is next to a
tile which you know to be safe. So you can't jump all the way to
the flag! If you open up a safe path then you have finished!
If you step on a mine then you get blown up!
How To Play:
------------
Double Click on its filer icon to start.
You will see something like this:
Y..1############
1112############

Key:
Y = You (the feet symbol)
F = Flag (exit)
# = an unlooked at tile, there may be a mine under it.
. = a safe space with no bombs around it (a blank square)
1 = a safe space with one bomb somewhere around it
2 = a safe space with two bombs around it
3,4,5, and so on
You have to move the feet symbol from the top left corner to the
flag in the bottom right. Easy huh! no. All the tiles on the board
start off hiding the ground beneath and if you step on a
boobytrapped tile then you get blown up! You can't jump over any
tiles so you must find a continuous clear path from the start to the
flag. There are fifty mined tiles, so this isn't easy. But you do
have help. You have an automatic mine detector which will tell you
how many mines there are around a square. If there are none then the
mine detector can check all the squares around that one, and so on.
It is even possible for your automatic mine detector to find a path
from the start to the exit on its first try if the mines leave a
large path!
So you can move to any of the squares marked by a ! by clicking on
that square with the select/left mouse button:
Y..1!###########
1112!###########

Which move to make???
---------------------
Y..1G########### Either F or G has a bomb
1112F########### because of the "1" at the top
ABCDE########### but not both.
################
################ Similarly A or B has one bomb due
################ to the one on the left.
################
################ But also see that there must be only
################ one bomb between A B and C because
################ the "1" above the B is next to only
################ _one_ bomb.
################
################ So C has no bomb, because the one
################ bomb in A B or C must be in A or B.
################
###############F
You can move to that square by clicking on it with the left mouse
button. The mine detector will calculate the number of bombs around
it and spread out if there are none.
Remembering where the bombs are:
--------------------------------
If you feel you have found a bomb you can mark that square by
pressing the right hand mouse button over it. A bomb will be drawn
on that tile, but you may, or may not be right.
If you want to mark a tile as being safe then you do the same as
before, but click the right button twice. The tile will be marked
"OK". (This isn't that necessary, because if you know a tile is safe
then you can usually just step on it and let the mine detector do
its job)
And if you press the right button for a third time the marker will
disappear.
Finishing:
----------
If the mine detector clears a safe path to the exit you will be
congratulated on getting out.
If you step on a mine then you will get blown up.
You will then be asked if you want to try again on a new mined board.
Starting a New Game:
--------------------
If you want to change the number of mines for your next game then
change the number in the "New Game" menu option. (Middle button,
highlight "New Game", move right, press delete twice, type new
number, press mouse button). A New Game will start with your new
number of mines. If you want to start a New Game with the same
number of mines then just select the New Game menu option.
Pausing a Game:
---------------
You can't stop the clock in the middle of a game, but if you want to
get rid of the big window then you can by clicking on its close
window icon (the X near the top left). You can restart the game by
clicking on the Mines icon on the iconbar.
Difficulty:
-----------
You can make the game more difficult (or easier) by changing the
number of hidden mines by changing the number in the "New Game" menu
option. The computer will re-mine the field with the new number
of mines.
Quitting the game:
------------------
Select "Quit" from the menu.
